I was born and raised in Thailand. I grew up in a family that strictly emphasized and passed on an important set of values: generosity, honesty, integrity and kindness
and, more importantly, the value of education because we believe that having these values helps us to improve our lives and it is an investment in our future.
In order to get a better education, I moved from my hometown, Sikiu, in the northeast (Isan), to study in Bangkok, where most of the highest quality educational institutions are located.
After my high school years, I went to Srinakharinwirot University and earned a bachelor's degree in Teaching English. I started my first career as a teacher of English at Vajiravudh College in Bangkok. After three years of teaching students grades 9-12 at Vajiravudh, I realized that teaching children was not my long term career interest. But I still loved teaching, so I changed my career goal to teaching adults by earning a Master’s degree in Higher and Adult Continuing Education from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. I came to TC in New York at that time because it was one of the best educational institutions in the world.
I always wanted to work in Thailand so I returned there and worked at Mahidol University in Bangkok in the Office of the President as an Academic Affairs Officer which was the position available for me at that time. The job at Mahidol was not my first choice as a career; I would have preferred teaching at the college level. However, my experience at Mahidol has had a profound influence on my life. My job at Mahidol included text book and research promotion, organizing medical and scientific conferences for three medical schools, and serving on the medical research editorial committee.
For these broad areas of duties and responsibilities I learned to adapt to new environments and how to get along with my colleagues and fellow workers, because we
usually worked in teams. For five years on this job, I learned and developed many leadership and organizational skills as well as official communication skills in the
workplace. These experiences have had great impacts on my life. They helped me to maintain a positive attitude in the workplace and helped shape my character. I appreciate hard work and value challenging situations.
I returned to Teachers College in 1988. At TC I continued my graduate education while working full-time in the library. My job in the library involved supervising
part-timers at the Circulation Desk and managing reserve materials for faculty and students. After the library reorganized its internal structure my position and duties
changed to the acquisition of library materials on demand and library material records maintenance. I am more satisfied with this new role and responsibility, especially
when our library adopted digital and computing technologies to support our library work and services. They help me work more efficiently and productively.
My interest and willingness to learn new things has inspired me to earn two more Master’s degrees while working full-time at Teachers College. The areas of interest
and specialization of these two graduate programs are International Educational Development with specialization in TESOL, and Communication, Computing and Technology in Education. The learning experiences from my graduate programs have contributed to my daily work and responsibilities in the library. Our library also plays an important role in enhancing the faculty's effectiveness and classroom performance. It promotes individual and group learning with cutting edge instructional technologies in the Learning Theater. Our library is a unique and valuable resource for promoting lifelong learning and professional development.
Working in the library helps me cultivate a service-centered attitude and I am sure that my job in the library is not less important than the teaching job that I still miss. I always believe that true success in life is not only in learning but also in its application for the benefit of people in society. Therefore I often spend time doing volunteer activities in my community, the Morningside Gardens in Manhattan https://mhhc.coop/ where I live.
