Resource Highlight: TeachingBooks

Gottesman Libraries subscribes to TeachingBooks, a database of children's and young adult literature and resources that aims to empower every reader to connect deeply with a book, gain new insights and understanding from authors, and thoroughly experience the joy of reading.

Not only a database of children's and YA literature, TeachingBooks also serves as a curricular resource. They offer a growing and vetted collection of instructional materials that assist in identifying exceptional books that reflect diverse cultural experiences, interests, and ability levels, obtaining resources paired with book titles, and flexibility in options for sharing resources within your learning communities.

It is easy to set up an account in TeachingBooks and begin exploring their offerings. There are also easy-to-use list features and downloadable lesson plans tailored for New York educators, aligned with engageNY, and New York specific awards like the NY Science Lists.

Enriched metadata offers book list and individual title text complexity reports, including grade level, Lexile, ATOS, Fountas & Pinnell, and Flesch-Kincaid reading levels. These features can assist educators in differentiated instruction and scaffolding.

In celebrating the 2019 Children's Award Winners booklist and display, I decided to test out the TeachingBooks reading list feature. I was delighted by how easy it was to search for award winners and build a list that included not only book titles, but teaching resources as well. You can view the list here.

TeachingBooks also provides a list of award winners, discoverable by search or from the browse page. Additional filter options include filtering by grade level, curricular area, genre, cultural area, nationality, and more.
