Mapping the World as You Walk Through It

The way in which we study and design spaces has changed dramatically as technology has advanced. Cartography has come a long way since Leonardo da Vinci’s aerial map; not only do we have the tools to create accurate maps of landscapes and building interiors, we have the tools to capture a space from every possible angle. As indoor environments become bigger and more comprehensive, 3D scanning technology has become an essential tool to better manage, monitor, and enhance space.

Kaarta can produce 3D maps of spaces in real-time. Their mobile robots transform both indoor and outdoor environments into actionable 3D digital models that can help researchers, designers, scientists, city planners, archeologists, factory owners, and others to learn about and improve the space they’re in. Kaarta's technology is also helping autonomous robots navigate the spaces around them to function more reliably and accurately.

Rendering Models for a Variety of Purposes

Kaarta has engineered three main systems: Stencil (intended for long-range mobile mapping outdoors and in large-scale interiors), Contour (an all-in-one color 3D capture system for complex interiors), and Traak (best suited for rapid localization data collection and in assisting autonomous robots with decision making). Each has supported a broad range of work, from modern forest inventory collection to determining the feasibility of aircraft maintenance.

A number of functions unique to each system are crucial to what Kaarta hopes will lead to a faster, more accurate, and more comprehensive collection of data. For instance, Traak doesn’t rely on GPS to create maps, so is not restricted inside buildings or beneath tree canopies. Additionally, Contour is designed for immediate mapping and interaction, giving users who have limited time complete control during the capture process. With any luck, these new scanning and mapping innovations can lead to the sort of learning Leonardo da Vinci could only have imagined.
