It Takes a Community to Raise a Child

"It takes a village to raise a child" is the traditional African proverb; however, the social environment in modern society has changed dramatically, so much so that villages are not available for most children. This video introduces community efforts at Hilltop Pittsburgh to build a supportive network of learning that serves as a village for the under-resourced community children and youth in the neighborhood.

One strength of this network is the variety of enrichment programs provided by local community organizations. Children not only learn about new technologies that are not accessible at home, but they also have the opportunity to develop social and emotional skills in other nurturing community spaces, such as the local library and on Vialogues.

Excerpts from the discussion:

@04:13 Wang: "More than anything, kids just want to be heard." She really explains the essence of the best education.

@04:24 Wang: Not only economic development but also human development to help the communities to address various needs.
