Acrobatiq is a courseware platform based on learning science principles and leveraging the power of big data to provide effective online learning. Based in the work of Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Learning Initiative and tapping into the research resources and talents from CMU communities, Acrobatiq features adaptive learning technology that provides instructional content to meet each individual student’s demonstrated learning proficiency. Instructors can adopt and adapt courses on Acrobatiq for their students and integrate them into most popular learning management systems such as Moodle or Blackboard.

Each course starts with a unit that teaches learning strategies to help students get the most out of Acrobatiq. Instructors will find the learning dashboard particularly powerful and helpful. It provides comprehensive learning analytics including the frequency of students' visits to the content, content strengths and weaknesses, and the activities or modules that draw most or least attention from students. Instructors can easily identify students' performance and level of engagement on any course activities or modules and see results on both individual or group levels. The navigation bar provides an overview of each course, and the interactive visual course materials work well in the sample online courses.

Currently Acrobatiq only provides nine courses. While all these courses are carefully engineered to ensure that they reflect key principles of learning science and represent a wide variety of subject areas, these selections will not meet the huge demands and needs of online learners. Furthermore, while instructors can modify some settings of these courses, are not able to create their own courses on Acrobatiq, which limits its potential for wider adoption.

Our Takeaway:

Acrobatiq opens one exciting possibility of adoptable and adaptable online courses with comprehensive learning analytics from its well designed learning dashboard. It would be more powerful if it opens its production process and enables instructors to create their own courses for a richer collection of learning experiences on the platform.

The Bottom Line:

Acrobatiq demonstrates a powerful learning dashboard for effective online learning.
