Research shows that private schools are more effective than public schools. As a result, there is a movement to privatize public education around the country through charter schools and vouchers. Charter schools are publicly funded, but privately operated. There are approximately three million students attending charter schools around the country. They have shown tremendous progress and have given low socioeconomic families a choice on how they want their children to be educated. President Donald Trump and Secretary of Education Betsey Devos have made privatization a top priority in their education policy. President Trump has proposed to use $20 billion in federal money to allow parents to send their children to schools of their choice. The administration wants to create alternatives and provide families with more options when choosing primary schools.
